Beyond Resolutions: Stepping Into Your Dream

In the previous blog, we talked about Rescuing Our Resolutions — shifting our focus from rigid goals to a deeper why. That why isn’t just about numbers on a scale, logging workouts, or drinking more water. Beneath every resolution lies something bigger — a dream of who we want to become.

Maybe it’s the dream of feeling strong and confident in your body, or dropping a few clothing sizes. Perhaps it’s waking up energized instead of exhausted, or finding a work/life balance.

The resolution was never the goal. Becoming is.

Stepping Into Your Future Self

Before we begin, understand, this blog is to be savored, chewed thoroughly, not gulped down quickly.

Let’s take a moment to move beyond goals. I’d like for us to take a ride in my time machine. We’re going to travel to the future where you have successfully navigated your resolutions and are living the life, experiencing the health, and feeling how you want to feel. We will travel forward in time to meet you, the person who has already lived this transformation.

Let me push a few buttons, turn a few dials, flip a few switches. Ok, here we go!

We’re here! And there you are, being, living and doing the person you want to become through the why and the dream of your resolutions. I’m curious.

  • What are you doing?

  • What does a normal day of the new you look like?

  • What’s better in your life now?

  • What healthier habits have your developed?

(Hint: Use present tense verbs when answering these questions. Examples: I am going for a walk each morning. I am eating a healthy breakfast before I leave the house. I am shutting down my devices earlier in the evening.)

Close your eyes for a moment and see yourself — your future self — thriving. Bask in that vision.

  • What does it feel like?

  • Where in your body do you feel this new you?

  • What is different about you now?

Bringing the Future Into Today

Now, I’d like us to hop back into the time machine and go back to the present. Bring that image of your future self with you.

Let me push a few buttons, turn back a few dials, flip a few switches. Ok, here we go!

You saw the future you. The you doing and being everything you wanted to be when you made the resolutions. Hopefully you felt what the new you will feel like. Next, what is one small step — one tiny action — you can take today to bring you closer to the future you?

Think small. Not an overhaul; not a complete transformation — just one action that moves you forward. It could be just being more mindful of ingredients on labels, or maybe looking for a workout studio near you. It could be merely looking at your calendar and planning when a good time would be to reserve some down time for yourself, or perhaps turning screens off 10 minutes earlier in the evening.

It doesn’t need to be dramatic to be meaningful. Small steps, done consistently, create the path forward.

Ask yourself:

  • What exactly will you do? For example, instead of “exercise more,” it might be “stretch for five minutes before bed.”

  • How will you you know you’ve done it? Will you track it in a journal, set a timer, or check if off a list?

  • Does this feel doable with your current schedule and energy level? If not, how can you make it smaller — more attainable?

  • Given your life right now, is this something you can actually follow through on? If not, how can you define it to make follow through possible?

  • When will you do it? Today? Tomorrow morning? After lunch?

Check in with yourself. On a scale of 1 - 10, how confident do you feel about taking this step:

  • If your number is 6 or greater, you’re on the right track. Trust yourself, take the step and notice how it feels.

  • If your number is 5 or less, the step might be too big. How can you refine it? Can you make it smaller, simpler, or easier to fit into your day? Even the tiniest action counts — it just needs to be doable.

The goal isn’t to force change overnight. It’s to take one step in the direction of the person you are becoming. If you’re wondering what comes next after that first step, that’s exactly where ongoing support makes all the difference.

Every Step Shapes Your Becoming

There’s no perfect path, only the next step forward. Your future self isn’t waiting for you to to have it all together — your future self is waiting for you to begin. I’d love to hear what step you’re taking first. Let me know in the comments below or send me a message.

The dream of you is already in motion.
